Cheap IT Equipment is a Bait & Switch Deal

BAIT BEING THE CHEAP UPFRONT COST OF THE DEVICE, AND SWITCH BEING THE PRODUCTIVITY LOST UTILISING IT.

FOR EXAMPLE - BUYING A CHEAPER LAPTOP FROM HIGH STREET STORES MAY SAVE YOU MONEY IN THE SHORT TERM, BUT IT CAN COST YOU A LOT OF LONG TERM. ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE USING THIS LAPTOP FOR BUSINESS PURPOSES.

These slower/cheaper/entry level laptops are best suited for home/personal occasional use in the evenings and weekends, or as a secondary device - but definitely not as your main device that you reply upon.

Anything being used that is not fit for it’s intended purpose in life can slow you down immensely costing you time and making you far less productive. This is most true for business IT.

The #1 excuse we hear to justify the purchase of a cheaper/entry level laptop is “but I don’t do much on it”.

This is true and you will probably get away with it for 6-18 months but after this you won’t be able to do much multitasking at all. Due to how slow and unusable it is as the CPU/RAM/SSD won’t be able to keep up. When we are servicing the laptop/device we must charge for our time, and in general these invoices are more expensive due to how slow the laptops are - waiting on them to perform basic tasks.

The best analogy we can come up with is you wouldn’t buy a cheap and small car to tow a boat. So, you wouldn’t buy an entry level laptop made for personal use to do 8am -5pm business work on it.

The worst part of slower/cheaper laptops we can’t really service them as in general they can’t be upgraded, and due to the slower parts already in them the device won’t improve in speed from any tweak performed on it. They verge on being E-Waste when purchased for the incorrect purpose.

This is what it looks like to us when a business uses incorrect devices for commercial purposes.
