Fast Start Up - Your PC is not actually shutting down correctly...

WHAT WE MEAN BY THE TITLE IS THAT THERE IS A FUNCTION IN WINDOWS 10 CALLED “FAST STARTUP” THAT COULD BE HAMPERING SHUTTING DOWN YOUR PC AND YOU MAY NOT REALISE.

It’s not your fault, we promise. Microsoft in their infinite wisdom have enabled this function by default, and even if it is disabled, it can be re-enabled by updates. Yay….

To explain further, do you remember back in the day of wonderful Windows XP, and you had the option to Hibernate your PC instead of shutting it down.

Ahhh the good old days of XP

What this meant is that everything would be saved as is, and when your PC turned back on it’d be a lot faster to load back up, and everything that was open would be as-is.

However, the drawback of Hibernation / Fast Startup is that if there any issues and/or stuck apps this gets saved, then loaded back upon startup. This issue compounds if you’re using your PC all day, then hitting shut down at the end of the day, then starting it back up the next day. This was and still is best practice… only if Fast Startup is disabled.

The Restart function is unaffected, however.

We would highly recommend disabling Fast Startup where possible, and here’s how:

Go to Control Panel, then Power Options

Click on ‘Choose what the power buttons do”

Click on ‘Change settings that are currently unavailable’, make sure the ‘Turn on fast startup (recommended) is unticked, then click ‘Save Changes’

It’s that easy, and will save a lot of frustration in time lost trying to figure out why your PC is running optimally even when you have ‘shut down’, and ‘turned the PC back on’.

If you need assistance, or the option is not available, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!
